5 August, 2011 4:35PM AEST

Turtle stolen from UnderWater World

The Sunshine Coast public are being asked to help find a turtle that's believed to have been stolen from UnderWater World at Mooloolaba and dumped near Mountain Creek.

UnderWater World said they immediately contacted the police and subsequently the alleged thieves realised this was no laughing matter and went back to the site of where they dumped the turtle.
UnderWater World are calling for help from the public to help find the stolen turtle that has been reportedly dumped in the region of Mountain Creek School.
"It is a very sad day when people think stealing an animal is a fun thing to do," says General Manager of UnderWater World, Tim Stonhill.
The turtle in question, named by staff as Emily, is an Eastern Snake Neck Turtle.
The size of a dinner plate with a long neck it is approximately 8-10 inches; staff say she has been brought up in captivity and would not be used to fending for herself in the wild.
Emily was housed in an exhibit that purposely has a lower than normal fence to encourage children to observe the animals.
If anyone finds Emily, staff encourage they pick her up gently and put her in a big bucket of cool fresh water and to contact UnderWater World immediately on 5458 6226.
