NEWS - LONG ARM OF THE LAW ENDS TORTOISES 'HOUDINI' STUNT

Long arm of law ends tortoise's 'Houdini' stunt

RUNAWAY: A tortoise was found crawling down a Wairoa street.

A runaway tortoise was understood to be back in the hands of its owner after being found crawling down a Wairoa street.

The finding of its rightful home, within little more than an hour on Friday, came down largely to the local knowledge of people such as area police officer Senior Sergeant Tony Bates, who has been in the town almost 20 years.

He was anxious about the custodial future of the "right little Houdini" after it was brought in, he said: "I started ringing around people I thought might have an interest in tortoises."

He thought he'd cracked it when one person revealed he'd had a tortoise that "wandered off" about a week ago. But word got around somewhat quicker than its subject, which had been found mid-afternoon in Black St, near Kowhai Place, and the "plate-sized" tortoise was soon claimed by another lover of the durable species testudinidae.

Which leaves just one question: Where is the other wandering tortoise?
